Ray Statz: A Fencing Pioneer

Ray Statz, the founder of Qual Line Fence, and a lifelong resident, recounts his journey growing up as one of 14 children after the Great Depression, and his start at a local gas station.

He provides a unique look at the evolution of local industry, detailing how he founded his fencing company in 1956 and eventually developed a nationally recognized ASTM method for setting fence posts without concrete. Beyond his professional life, Ray shares stories of Waunakee’s history, including his role in installing the original “Only Waunakee in the World” signs and his extensive community service with the Rotary Club.

The video also explores Ray’s personal passions, from his years racing motorcycles with “Team Shiftless” to his later success in sports car racing at age 70. From tales of local bank robbers to memories of rationing during World War II, this interview is a rich tapestry of small-town history and entrepreneurial spirit.
