Harvesting at the Schumacher Farm

A glimpse into the past at the Schumacher Farm Park, where vintage machinery is bringing the 1920s back to life. Despite a recent windstorm that blew the oat crop flat to the ground, crews are working to salvage the grain using a 1920s McCormick Deering grain binder

The process involves cutting and binding the oats into bundles, which are then “shocked” (stacked upright) to dry in the field. These harvested oats are being prepared for a special purpose: they will be used in live demonstrations at the upcoming Harvest Festival. Visitors to the festival will get to see steam-powered engines operating authentic threshing machines from the 1920s and 30s to process these very same bundles.
