The school was positioned just outside of Waunakee and tied to the growth of rural one-room schoolhouses from the late 1800s. Schools like this accommodated between 20 to 35 pupils at a time. The children ranged in age from early childhood up to teenagers. They were taught simultaneously by a single teacher.
Classes were scheduled around farming calendars to allow children to help with planting and harvest seasons.
